Learn & Create

My wife Keisha and I founded this studio to inspire people to create without bounds or excuses. In 2021  I wrote, illustrated, and self-published my first children's book "I think I'm a little bit different". I reminded myself that I can always do two things: learn and create. So during the pandemic, I did just that, I learned how to draw, and shortly after I created my first children's book.

Here I was with a book and no way to promote it. Sure, I can make a post saying "I wrote a book and you should check it out" (and did), but that wasn’t enough. Lightbulb! Keisha gifted me a video lighting kit for Christmas, let’s put that to use. This thought felt right and in true millennial fashion, I went immediately to Amazon. I searched high and low for a puppet companion and finally, I saw a cute little superhero hand puppet and clicked 'Buy now'. Two shipping days later he arrived and that day we filmed the promo.

I knew nothing about film besides the one semester of Multimedia I took in high school. I didn't know how to light a green screen or key out a background in post. I didn't know camera lenses, angles, and settings. There was so much I didn't know and none of that mattered. I knew how to turn on the lights, and camera, and bring the action; everything else I’ll learn. It took a few days to edit the video and then I released it. Shortly after, I received messages saying the promo video was great so I took that as a cue to keep building. I DMd and emailed a bunch of self-published authors and offered to record a read-a-long video for their book for free. Every day I set up my greenscreen in my mother-in-law's basement, and then I recorded and edited the read-a-longs for authors.

Here I was a couple of months later with an archive of videos. Keisha told me I could turn this into a show and I took that as another cue to get to work! I thought about what this show could be for kids and what message I wanted to convey. I knew I wanted to show the gentleness of a 6'5" black man and my costar had to be adorable. I knew that the relationship had to feel real and I didn't want to treat my costar as "just a puppet" but rather a friend. I teamed up with a puppet builder who worked for The Jim Henson Company and together we created my costar, Quay'Von!

Imagine Nation Studios was created because I needed a company that embodies my philosophy on content production. Every person can visit their Imagine Nation and bring back with them creations beyond compare. You don’t need a big budget, a huge studio, and all the top equipment to start. All those things will come if you continue to learn, and create. Our job is to share creations from countless Imagine Nations.
